HABIT FOR SERVICE
Habit for Service is the name of our volunteer program here at Incline High School. We encourage all our students to become participants in their community by volunteering their time. Students not only benefit intrinsically by feeling good about giving something back, but may also earn other rewards. Many colleges, universities, and scholarships are seeking applicants who have made a positive contribution through volunteering. This year, the Parasol Foundation is asking that students who apply for their scholarships complete at least 100 hours of community service prior to the application deadline in February.
Here’s how it works:
· Students go to the Career Center and look on the Habit for Service Board.
· Once they are matched with a local non-profit organization, the students simply keep a log of their volunteer hours on the Volunteer Verification Sheet.
· A supervisor, not a parent, must sign the log to confirm the number of hours worked.
· Students turn in their log to Marilyn McLochlin in the Career Center where she keeps track of all the hours in a data base.
· Copies of the logs are kept in the students personal files in the Career Center and the number of hours will be put on the student’s transcripts.
Ways in which students may earn volunteer hours include, but are not limited to:
· Volunteering with any of our local non-profit organizations
· Donating time to church activities
· Volunteering at Incline Village Health Center
· Tutoring
· Coaching AYSO
· Volunteering at Pet Network
Students earn volunteer hours in a number of different ways, but they may not “double dip.” There is no volunteer credit given if students are receiving any other benefit from doing the work. For example, a student who receives school credit for peer tutoring may not also receive volunteer credits. Community service hours that are assigned by either the school or the court system as a punishment are not considered to be part of our Habit for Service Program. If you have any questions or concerns, please see Marilyn McLochlin in the Career Center.
