Biology: Notice to Parents

Course Content
This course will include the study of cells, biochemistry, genetics, evolution, microbiology, botany, zoology, and ecology. It includes many labs.

Much of the material given in class, such as lectures and tutorials, are formatted in PowerPoint. For Biology students, a CD with an entire year's material will be given to the students for free as a supplemental studying resource.

Class Rules
In order to ensure a student's basic right to learn, the following rules apply to this class:
    • Come to class ready to learn with paper, pen/pencil, and textbook.
    • Remain quiet while the teacher is addressing the class.
    • Do independent work quietly by yourself.
    • No other work is allowed in class.

A new District dress code is now in effect and will be enforced.

Grading
NOTE: Grades are now available to students and their parents on www.Edline.net. These grades are updated every week.           • Points will be given for homework, quizzes, tests, and labs.
• The grading scale: A 90 - 100%
                                B 80 - 89%
                                C 70 - 79%
                                D 60 - 69 %

•  Final exam is worth 20% of semester grade. Extra credit is not offered.

Make-ups:
If absent, the make-up period is equal to the number of days absent.
The student is responsible for obtaining make-up materials (a file is provided).
Late assignments are not accepted.

What You Can Do:
• Make sure student has good homework and study habits.
• Updated grades are posted every week. Inquire regularly about them, or go to www.Edline.net.

•I am available at school one hour before and at least one hour after regular school hours.

Lab Fee
Labs and hands-on activities are abundant during this course. A $10.00 lab fee for perishable materials is required for this class. If there is a difficulty with this please contact me immediately since students will not be allowed to participate in labs without it. If paying by check, you may make it out to Incline High School.

 

Class Rules & Procedures

Students' Rights
All students have the right to learn and to have an environment that does not restrict or hamper that right, to be free from harassment, and to be treated with due recognition of personal dignity.

General rules expected of all students:
1) Come to class ready to learn with textbook, notebook, & pen/pencil
2) Remain quiet while teacher is addressing the class.
3) Do independent work quietly by yourself.
4) No other work is allowed in class.

Tardies:
-3 tardies and each tardy thereafter will result in a citizenship grade drop.
-3 tardies and each tardy thereafter will also result in a lunch detention.

Hall pass policy:
-Once bell rings students will not be allowed out of the room except for:
    1. An emergency requiring the nurse.
    2. Forgetting materials.
    3. Lavatory.

-Four hall passes worth 4 points each are given to each student each semester. Unused hall passes may be redeemed at end of semester.
-Only one student may leave at one time.
-Permission to leave class will not be granted for things that can be done on your own time such as:
    •phone calls
    •business at the office (including counselor visits).
    •conferences with another teacher (unless requested by teacher)

Food and drink -- must be kept outside classroom. No food or drink (except water) is allowed in the classroom at any time.

Copying
Copying homework, etc., will result in both students' homework being thrown out. No excuses. You are responsible for making sure no one "borrows" your work.

Consequences of Disruption in Class:
First offense -- Warning
Second offense -- Moved to another area (such as back room)
Third offense -- Call home
Fourth offense -- Visit to office and / or suspension from class

Grades
-Grades will be updated and posted every Monday.
-All final grades are based on accumulated points. I do not grade on a curve.

Homework:
HW is due at beginning of class (otherwise it is not accepted).
For excused absences, # of days absent = # of days to make up HW.

Absences:
Assignments will be listed on a calendar board -- you are responsible for your own make-up work.
You are responsible for getting the lecture material from another student (or the room computer).

Seating:
I make up a new random seating chart every three weeks.
Once you are assigned a seat you are expected to remain there.

Lab Books:
Required for Biology. These must be lined composition books only.
